The commenter “Unknown” in the BiblePlaces blog (see link above) makes some strong geographical arguments, starting with this one:
Does Ezekiel 16:46 provide clues to where at this time they thought Sodom was located? Isn’t Tall el-Hammam east of Jerusalem but this verse says it would be south or can we not use this verse to help locate Sodom? The verse reads:
“Your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells with her daughters to the north of you; and your younger sister, who dwells to the south of you, is Sodom and her daughters.” (NKJV)
I find that 95+% conclusive for the expected location of Sodom relative to Jerusalem. Tall al Hammam is directly east of Jerusalem, so it cannot be Sodom. Seldom does the biblical text give ‘gratuitous’ directions, i.e. N (Samaria) and S (Sodom). BIblical site identities have been firmly established on less information than we have for Sodom.
