Hi James. If you have that NET Bible (1st ed.) footnote for Num 1:21 I would be pleased to have the ref to add to my own footnotes. It’s a bit of fun to tot up the numerical value of some of the Hebrew phrases. I wonder what the gematriasts (is that a word?) would do with the figure for the final census, 601,730 (Num 26:51)? What phrase would they have to find to match those digits? Maybe the NET Bible footnote goes on to say.
Gematria doesn’t help in determining an actual figure for the Israelite population of the exodus and conquest, nor does it help with the problems of the large numbers of the OT which continue on into accounts of the monarchic period. I have a thoroughly reasoned proposal for what has happened to the OT numbers, but I need to publish it before posting it here or anywhere.
