    Conclusion (cont.)

All circumstantial descriptions of Israel in the wilderness indicate a compact and integrated camp where “all the people” could assemble at the door of the Sanctuary (Num 10:3), stone an offender (Num 15:36), or hear Moses speak (Deut 31:30)…. No matter what theory of interpretation one might explore, the census figures found in the book of Numbers remain demonstrably corrupted. The best that can be aimed for, therefore, is to seek an optimal convergence of translation and calculation, whilst recognising that the national totals and the Sanctuary tax amount only ‘solve’ for about 600,000 men.
