I also had a bit of a problem, as you did, with hearing that a person who ‘thought a lot’ of the Bible stories are ‘metaphor’ could also have faith in ‘God’. This is especially ironic in the case of a famous movie-making story-teller whose Earthly fame and fortunes were due to his abilities to ‘metaphor-ize’ Bible stories into Hollywood productions in order to attract public interest. But Who made the greatest real life stories in the history of this planet, Earth — using real people involved in real metaphors or ‘parables’ or ‘proverbs’ . . . — if not the Creator(s) of this Earth and the humans made of it ?

From the time Noah parted ways with his evil neighbors to build a ‘crazy’ boat under God’s ‘direction’, as later did Abraham when he ‘crazily’ left his successful family, his city, and his country to follow God’s ‘direction’ to begin a truly ‘new world order’ in a promised ‘land’ to be governed by the promised Christ-to-come . . . the Creator(s) used those humans who would willingly (and sometimes unwillingly) become ‘free-will’ cast-members in this greatest movie-story of all time called ‘Human History — the Rise and Fall, and Rise Again’.

Incredible ‘direction’ skills ! Yet for an Almighty God-Director Who knows the end from the beginning — even all throughout the endless universe — organizing and presenting such living ‘metaphor-movies’ about dealing with a deadly outbreak of ‘sin’ on tiny ‘petri dish’ ‘Earth’ would be easy as sneezing in comparison to DeMille’s greatest efforts to make and publicize bits and crumbled particles of the same.

DeMille played his tiny tightly-managed ‘make believe’ metaphoric Hollywood particles to an audience of millions of humans.

But the Creator(s) have played their real-life, free-will metaphoric productions to an innumerable audience, for their education and warning against ‘sin’.

As one of the most interesting (female) writers I know of once wrote in agreement with Paul (who described himself and others of God’s friends as ‘a spectacle [‘theater’] to angels and to men’), “Our little world is the lesson book of the universe.” . . . . Here is the full paragraph :

“By coming to dwell with us, Jesus was to reveal God both to men and to angels. He was the Word of God,—God’s thought made audible. In His prayer for His disciples He says, “I have declared unto them Thy name,”—“merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,”—“that the love wherewith Thou hast loved Me may be in them, and I in them.” But not alone for His earthborn children was this revelation given. Our little world is the lesson book of the universe. God’s wonderful purpose of grace, the mystery of redeeming love, is the theme into which “angels desire to look,” and it will be their study throughout endless ages. Both the redeemed and the unfallen beings will find in the cross of Christ their science and their song. It will be seen that the glory shining in the face of Jesus is the glory of self-sacrificing love. In the light from Calvary it will be seen that the law of self-renouncing love is the law of life for earth and heaven; that the love which “seeketh not her own” has its source in the heart of God; and that in the meek and lowly One is manifested the character of Him who dwelleth in the light which no man can approach unto.” ~ E.G. White, The Desire of Ages, Chapter 1, “God With Us”, paragraph 2

So, in the bigger, universe-wide picture of the whole history of ‘Sin’ and ‘Redemption’ from sin — which DeMille could never hope to tell the scope of on film — ‘metaphor’ (LIVING metaphor) is not a ‘dirty word’, but the real-life essence of ‘Lesson Book Earth’, and its history with free-will sin, and with free-will redemption. A ‘metaphoric’-example-parable which the Creators knew all the details of completely before creating the Earth and man-kind of it . . . an incredible, yet very real ‘production’, indeed ! Yet, equally incredible is that Earth’s humans still think, ‘It’s all about just us.’ ! ?
